Anyone who remembers the iconic Back to the Future movies with Marty McFly, played by Michael J Fox, will certainly recall the fantastic DeLorean time travelling supercar, the hoverboard and other futuristic gizmos. Another accessory that became synonymous with young McFly in the movie were his cool Nike basketball trainers with glowing LED lights and power laces!
In the original movie, the Nike Mag trainers were around in the year 2015, promoted as the best trainers ever made! It may not be 2015 yet, but Nike have actually put the Back to the Future trainers into production. Designed as replicas as worn by Marty McFly in Back to the Future 2, the world renowned sportswear manufacturer released 1500 pairs exclusively for auction on eBay with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
As you can see from the video, several of the original stars of the movie series helped promote the new launch, including a fantastic appearance from the Doc!
The trainers themselves are authentic replicas of the original shoes from the movie, with multicouloured glowing LED heel panel, electroluminescent NIKE logo on the front or the ankle strap and glowing LED light panels on the side of the soles. The only thing missing are the power laces, unfortunately the technology won’t be available until 2015 to accomplish this great feature! In the meantime, luck owners will just have to lace them up themselves!
150 pairs of the Nike Mag trainers were made available on eBay every day for 10 days with the first batch of shoes going for as much as £5,639 per pair. It is reported that Tinie Tempah bought a pair for £24,000.
