What is a SMD (Surface Mounted Device)
A SMD is a light emitting diode which is mounted and soldered onto a circuit board. As it's soldered on it takes up very little space as it will not need any surrounding packaging, the most common place you will find single SMD would be in places where tiny physical space is at a premium.
Benefits of SMD
As they are very small and they have very low voltage requirements, which also means that they will produce little heat. As they are soldered on this will mean that they do not need any enclosure that will focus the beam therefore it can have a much wider viewing angle.
At ledhut.co.uk we have a number of different SMD bulbs form our MR16 LED 24 piece (24 small SMD) to our small G4 SMD which is perfect if space is limited. With a 50000 hour life span and a low voltage to run these lights it saves energy which in turn will save you money on your electric bill.

Usages of SMD
They are commonly used to indicate device status on computer motherboards, hard drives, routers, flash drives and other applications where there's no room for larger technology are common uses.
Others include LCD display backlighting, keyboard lights, and pushbuttons. They've also been used for instrument panels in aircraft.
