Your guide to G9 LED spotlights

Ready to make the switch to LED and want to find out more? Then cast your eyes over our handy G9 LED buying guide to give you the lowdown.

What is a G9 LED spotlight?

G9 LED spotlights are frequently used in small areas, such as desk lamps, under cabinet light and over shelving. They differ, aesthetically, from the standard screw, bayonet and GU10 fittings you’ll be used to, instead sporting two looped prongs protruding from the base.

Like G4 LED spotlights, they consume very little energy - even in the world of increasingly efficient LEDs.

The good news is, however, that unlike G4 spotlights, G9s don’t require a special LED transformer, so you can just pop these into your existing G9 fittings.

What wattage do I need? Those used to buying halogen bulbs tend to measure brightness by wattage. It’s different for LED lights, which use their input power (wattage) almost exclusively for light.

With this in mind, it’s important to always look at the Lumen value of an LED. For instance, a spotlight that offers 320 lumens is comparable to 50W halogen light in terms of brightness - it just consume a tenth of the energy.

Also be aware that beam angle can affect brightness. Narrower beam angles (of 45° or less) produce a more focused, brighter light. A wider beam angle spreads the light further, thus casting a more subtle glow.

Which colour light is best for me?

G9 LED spotlights come in different colours too. These colours are measured in Kelvins.

The lower the Kelvin, the warmer the light, the higher the Kelvin, the cooler the light.

You can choose from 3 different colours: Cool White Warm White Daylight.

You can read more about our post on colour options here to see how they could look in your home.

What beam angle do I need?

Beam angle is measured in degrees. A wider beam angle covers more space with light.

Our G9 spotlights tend to come with wider beam angles, which makes them ideal for their most common purpose of illuminating shelving, desks and under cabinets.

How much will an LED G9 cost?

As with everything, you need to guard against paying peanuts for a product that doesn’t feature the latest technology or is made with dud components, while still getting value for money.

Prices start from approximately £6 and go up to £10 for the brighter G9 at LEDHut. Every spot is made with quality in mind and that’s why they’re designed to last 25,000 hours.
